Every year, Beakerhead features a restaurant week called Engineered Eats where Calgary restaurants are challenged to think up innovative, creative and outside-of-the-box dishes with a feature ingredient. This year’s ingredient is barley.
There are 24 dishes in total this year, with the majority coming to the barley table with a food dish. However four Calgary restaurants have also sought to help you whet your whistle with barley beverage offerings:
(814 – 1 Avenue NE & 126 – 10 Street NW)
Milkshake made with malted milk gelato.
(110 – 8 Avenue SW)
Sprouted Barley Cocktail – Lillet, white wine, citric acid, BC melon + elderflower and barley grass jelly, smoked with barley and tea leaves
(243 – 12 Avenue SW)
Barley cocktail: 2oz. Jameson’s Irish whiskey, vanilla rooibos syrup, roasted barley syrup , fresh lime, lemon, and orange juices, Angostura orange bitters.
(924 – 17 Avenue SW)
Barley cocktail: Barley bourbon sour, lemon thyme aquafaba
These creative drinks are available for a limited time only September 13-17. See the full participating list of restaurants by visiting beakerhead.org/events/engineeredeats (clicking on the link to the gallery near the top will bring you through to a list of dishes and descriptions).
